Get to Know Mike

Mike de Jong’s life and political career are a testament to his dedication to public service and his deep-rooted connection to the Abbotsford and Langley communities in British Columbia, Canada. Raised in Matsqui (now Abbotsford), de Jong’s upbringing in this vibrant community laid the foundation for his commitment to serving its residents and addressing   their needs. Mike went to school here at WJ Mouat Secondary, played hockey here, started his law practice and began his public service here as school trustee before becoming an MLA.

De Jong’s journey into politics was influenced by a blend of personal experiences and a desire to contribute positively to society. His early interest in governance and public policy was nurtured by his academic pursuits. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton University and later obtained a law degree from the University of Alberta. These formative  years were crucial in shaping de Jong’s analytical skills and his understanding of the legal framework that governs society, skills that would become invaluable in his public service.

Before venturing into provincial politics, de Jong practiced law, which provided him with first-hand insights into the challenges and concerns of ordinary citizens. After commencing his public service career as one of the youngest school trustees in BC, Mike de Jong’s was elected in 1994 as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the riding of Matsqui (later part of Abbotsford West constituency) in British Columbia. His election marked the beginning of a distinguished career in public service, during which de Jong has held several key positions in the provincial government.

Throughout his tenure in provincial politics, Michael de Jong has held key portfolios, including Finance, Health, Aboriginal Reconciliation, Forests and Attorney General, where he was instrumental in implementing policies that spurred economic growth, signed the only modern Canadian Aboriginal treaties, enhanced healthcare services, and maintained fiscal discipline. His leadership as BC’s Finance Minister was pivotal in achieving five balanced budgets, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to prudent financial management and accountability.

Throughout his public service, de Jong has been a passionate advocate for the Abbotsford and Langley communities. His dedication is evident in his efforts to secure funding for infrastructure projects, enhance local healthcare services including the Abbotsford Regional Hospital, and support agricultural initiatives, recognizing the sector’s importance to the region’s economy. De Jong’s commitment to his constituents and his ability to address their concerns has earned him respect and admiration, reinforcing his position as a trusted representative of the Abbotsford community.
